The District

Places to visit in Chamoli

Our district holds some of the Himalaya's most storied ground — the seat of Badrinath, flower valleys below snow peaks, and three of the five sacred confluences of the Alaknanda. All of it within a day's journey of your room.

Sacred Chamoli

Temples, shrines and river confluences along the old pilgrim road to Badrinath.

Joshimath
Gateway town

Joshimath

The hillside gateway

An hour up the valley, Joshimath — ancient Jyotirmath — is the winter seat of Lord Badrinath and one of the four maths founded by Adi Shankaracharya. In its oldest quarter grows the Kalpavriksha, a mulberry tree believed to be over twelve centuries old.

Today it is the practical hub of the district: the Auli ropeway begins here, and every road to Badrinath, the Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib passes through its bazaars.

Badrinath Temple
Char Dham shrine

Badrinath Temple

The throne of the mountains

One of the four holiest dhams of Hinduism, Badrinath sits in a dramatic amphitheatre between the Nar and Narayan peaks, with Neelkanth towering behind. Its sanctum holds Vishnu as Badrinarayan, carved in black stone and said to have been re-established by Adi Shankaracharya himself.

Pilgrims bathe first in the Tapt Kund, a hot spring bubbling beside the temple gates. The shrine opens from late spring until early November; in winter the deity rests at Joshimath.

Mana Village
Border village

Mana Village

India's last village

Three kilometres beyond Badrinath, Mana is the last inhabited village before the Tibetan frontier, home to the Bhotia community whose stone-and-slate houses climb the hillside in terraces.

Walk to Vyas Gufa, the cave where the sage is said to have composed the Mahabharata; cross the natural stone arch of Bhim Pul over the rushing Saraswati; and end with tea at the claimant to India's last tea shop.

Meadows & Peaks

Flower valleys, ski slopes and high grasslands — the landscapes Chamoli is loved for.

Auli
Ski resort

Auli

Slopes above the clouds

India's finest ski destination spreads below the cliffs of Gorson Bugyal, with groomed runs, chairlifts and winter temperatures that keep the powder dry well into March. The ropeway from Joshimath — among the longest in Asia — carries you above the deodars to the slopes.

In summer the same meadows turn emerald and cattle bells replace ski edges, always beneath the watching presences of Nanda Devi, Kamet and Dunagiri.

Distance: ≈ 40 km•Best time: Dec – Mar · Jun – Sep
Valley of Flowers
National park

Valley of Flowers

A meadow in full bloom

Each monsoon, a hanging valley below the Zanskar ranges erupts into bloom — blue poppies, brahma kamal, orchids and hundreds of other alpine species along the Pushpawati river. Legend places it as the valley where Hanuman gathered the sanjeevani herb.

The trek begins at Govindghat, climbing through Ghangaria to the park gate; entry is for day visits only, which keeps its silence intact.

Kuari Pass
Classic trek

Kuari Pass

The balcony of Nanda Devi

The 'Curzon Trail', walked by the Viceroy himself a century ago, climbs through oak forest and shepherd meadows to a pass at 4,264 m with arguably the grandest viewpoint in the Indian Himalaya — a wall of peaks including Nanda Devi, Dronagiri, Trishul and Kamet.

A moderate six-day trek from Auli or Ghat, it doubles beautifully as a winter snowshoe journey.

Distance: Multi-day trek•Best time: Mar – Jun · Sep – Dec

Great Journeys

Pilgrimages and treks worth planning your whole stay around — we arrange guides and permits.

Hemkund Sahib
Sikh pilgrimage

Hemkund Sahib

The lake at the roof of the world

At 4,632 metres, beside a star-shaped glacial lake ringed by seven snow peaks, stands the highest gurudwara in the world — sanctified as the meditation ground of Guru Gobind Singh in a former life, as recorded in his autobiography.

The steep climb from Ghangaria tests every pilgrim, and rewards every one: prayer echoing off ice, and langar served in the thin bright air. Most guests pair it with the Valley of Flowers, sharing the same base camp.

Distance: ≈ 20 km + 21 km trek•Best time: Jun – Oct
Roopkund
High-altitude trek

Roopkund

The mystery lake

A shallow glacial tarn at 5,029 metres beneath the flanks of Trishul and Nanda Ghunti — famous the world over for the hundreds of ancient skeletons that surface when its ice melts, travellers felled by a freak ninth-century hailstorm.

The approach is half the reward: days across Bedni Bugyal and other vast alpine meadows, among the finest camping grasslands in Asia. A serious, guided multi-day expedition.
